There are currently 7 authors published who have almost 100% chance of a 5/5 star rating from me on Goodreads. They are authors whom I buy the books of without hesitation, because they haven’t let me down through multiple books. Their new releases get added to a special book release calendar I keep. C.E., or “Kit” as she’s often called, is one of them.
This short story collection is based in an existing world, started in Heart of Stone, but reading the trilogy isn’t really needed to enjoy these stories, though I would suggest it anyway, because they’re great books. I love mythology, and taking creatures from mythology and giving them complex cultures and histories is something I don’t see done nearly enough. It’s not enough to just put them in our modern world and leave them as flat as the paintings they came out from. Kit manages to both weave tight stories, and to make you feel as if these creatures have the weight of all the history behind them.
This is a series, and a collection, you’ll want to study for the world and character building. Kit has a very deft touch, and sprinkles bits and pieces just after you need them. There’s no data dumps to slow you down, something I’ve seen all too often in even other published novels. Even in these short stories, there’s just enough information given about the backgrounds to give the characters’ motives, but not so much that you wonder when the action is going to start.
What books have you read lately that have great worldbuilding, or character building?
