The Writers Voice Contest

So there’s this lovely Writers Voice contest. It’s a multi-blog, multi-agent contest hosted by Cupid of Cupid’s Literary Connection, Brenda Drake of Brenda Drake Writes, Monica B.W. of Love YA, and Krista Van Dolzer of Mother. Write. (Repeat.) And somehow, I mangaged to refresh fast enough to get into this morning’s window. So… Here we go! (Feedback is always appreciated, from everyone!)

Query:

Islaine is the last child of the Fae. When she has a vision of the great Hunt, long since abandoned, she thinks she’s found out how to bring the children back. With the help of her longtime friend Tanian, she’s determined to make the Hunt ride again.

Going against the express wishes of the elders who control her court, Islaine knows she’s is playing with fire. The most she can hope for is to keep anyone she cares about from being destroyed along with her. She hopes if she keeps them all at arms length, despite her burgeoning feelings for Tanian, that somehow, they might stay safe.

The ride is only the beginning of a twisted and gnarled path that will take her across her world and beyond, leaving safety far behind.

First 250 words:

Islaine the Last slammed the ancient oak door of her room. Despite the force she used, it closed with a soft hush; the castle was too well-trained to do anything as disruptive as slamming. She flung herself on the fluffy white bed, sobbing fiercely. After a few moments, though, she pulled her long, pale hair out of her face, and glanced around the room.

“Any other time, this place is swarming with pixies! I wasted a perfectly dramatic entrance!”

A muffled giggle from behind the curtain told her the impulsive creatures weren’t far after all. Islaine pushed herself up off the bed, a sly grin replacing the pout she’d worn a moment before. She tapped her index finger against her heart shaped lips.

“How odd. A giggle from somewhere in the room. There must be a pixie hiding somewhere around here…” she mused, a hint of a smile in her crystal eyes. She lifted the top of a small mahogany box, shifting the bits of shiny stones and silver around inside. “Nope, not in the charm box.”

She bent to look under the bed, then made a show of flipping her hair back up out of her way twice, before declaring, “Not under the bed either. I wonder where they could be?”

Another giggle from behind the velvet curtain, and she reached out and flicked the curtain open, sending the small pixies spiraling around in windblown circles. Their rainbow wings fluttered as they rode the windstorm Islaine caused. Giggles exploded to full blown laughter, and Islaine joined them.

Thanks! ❤ It's one of those fun, sorta quirky stories that I couldn't resist writing.

Yay! I’m so glad you got in! The entry looks great – I still can’t believe you knocked out such an awesome query your first time.

Now I have to go read the rest!

*laughs* Amazingly, most of that was me, too! Only the first line and last paragraph were prodded by KT. 😛 Thanks! 😀 And yes, you do. XD Sooner you and KT are done reading it, sooner I can send it to Jai and a couple others who are begging to read it. 😛

Wow, I’m so intrigued by your query! It reminds me of Juliet Marillier a bit… Best of luck!!

Thank you! And ooh, I’d forgotten about her! I read one of her books back in middle high school (looking at the dates of the book I’m thinking of), and looks like she’s put a lot more out since then! Time to update the TBR list! Thank you!

Your query seems so dark – and your first 250 is so light and fun. I love that.

    Best of luck!

Thank you! It’s one of those stories that starts light, and gets progressively darker as the story itself goes. This character DEFINITELY gets changed by her story.

I remember this one from pitch madness!! I really love the voice, just like I did then ;o) This is such a cute 250. Good luck!!

    • Leigh Caroline said,

      May 5, 2012 at 9:59 pm

Nope, wasn’t in Pitch Madness. I did, however, put the 250 in an opening lines feedback blog separately, which is where you’re recognizing it from. But thank you! 😀 You’re the second person to recognize it from there, which bodes well for it sticking out. 🙂

Almost a “you had me at hello”. In fact you had me at “the castle was too well-trained”. Can’t wait to see this in print. Good luck (to the rest of us, who are going to need it)…. and I guess to you, who doesn’t :).

      Glad you like it! 😀
*laughs* Luck wouldn’t go amiss here either, lol! For me, putting this out here was more about seeing what people thought, rather than hoping for agent requests. I haven’t started querying, and I’ve been on the fence between this or another project to hook the agent. Good luck to you too!

The Hunt sounds so much like an Artemis thing. This sounds like a lot of fun! Best of luck!!

    • Leigh Caroline said,

*chuckles* This one’s more Celtic wild hunt than Artemis, though I do love Greek mythos too. I have a plot bunny that’s been running around for a few years that’s Greek, one of these years it’ll get written! And thank you! 🙂

🙂 Thank you! There are a lot of wonderful YA books out there right now. I’d suggest starting with Maggie Stiefvater’s books, they’re amazing!
